“Nine hikers, one torn tent, and decades of questions.”
In early 1959, nine experienced hikers died during a winter expedition in the northern Ural Mountains of the Soviet Union. Rescuers found their tent cut open from the inside, and the hikers had gone out into the freezing night without proper clothing or boots. For decades people suggested everything from avalanches to secret military tests. A Russian investigation in 2019–2020 concluded that an avalanche was the cause, and a 2021 scientific study described how a small slab avalanche could explain it. Not everyone is convinced. What do you think happened?
